History of Geography Department

Geography department first started in the year 2007 during which only Geography pass course was taught in graduation course.  The was given by North Bengal University, however in accordance to the Gour Banga University Act of 2008, the affiliation shifted to Gour Banga Univeristy. After 3 years of pass course, in 2010, the first batch for honours degree was started. Soonafter, appointment of teachers, arrangement of study materials and other infrastructure of the department such as instruments, maps and other lab essentials were purchased and the laboratory of the department was formally prepared. The Government of West Bengal had sanctioned for the appointment of guest lecturers and full time teachers for the department in 2007. In 2010, two guest lecturers were appointed. In 2013, the first batch of honours student successfully passed out as graduates in Geography and it provided hope and impetus for the department to guide more students through graduation in the subject. In 2015, the first full time teacher was appointed, who left the department after four months of service. In 2020, West Bengal State Government sanctioned the allowance and designation of Guest lecturer to change to State Aided College Teacher. In 2020, a full time teacher joined us in our team of teachers.

The Geography department in Balurghat Mahila Mahavidyalaya is one of the upcoming areas of admission for students in Dakshin Dinajpur district.  It has a very well equipped laboratory with all the instruments and study materials pertaining to the curriculum. Geography is a subject that offers multiple avenues  in higher studies. The department is our pride and glory that takes students and guides them, as they grow and prosper as ambitious women who are ready for the academic challenges ahead of them.

Objective of the department –

The objective of the department is to teach and guide students of the Geography department and enrich them with knowledge of the subject and its application in real life, so that the students can graduate to become young geographers with a an analytical geographical mind and a keen  geographic perspective. We always look forward to have ambitious undergraduate students who will take interest in the subject, become graduates from our institute and achieve success in leaps and bounds.

Major milestones since the inception of the department –

Over 200 students have passed graduation from this department. Sufficient infrastructure of the department catering to need of the students to receive hands-on guidance in GIS software has been installed.

Co curricular activities of the department –

Mandatory Academic excursion and using GIS software are a part of the curriculum.

Special Lecture conducted in November, 2021, lead speaker: Dr. Pradip Chouhan, Professor and Head of the Department, Department of Geography, University of Gour Banga.

Future Plans –

• To enable more students with the plan of seeking higher education in Postgraduate studies
• To motivate students to achieve higher ambition and develop interest in research studies.
• To arrange special lectures for the benefit of the students.
