HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT :

The college authority of the Balurghat Mahila Mahavidyalaya took a decision to introduce professional based subjects in the college. As the Balurghat Mahila Mahavidyalaya is the only girl’s college in the district and hundreds of parents still have the faith and believe on the college for its dedicated professors and success rate and a good number of first-generation learners take admission every year. so, the authority decided to introduce professional courses for the future of the students. In the year 2012 mass communication and Journalism was introduced for pass course subject. In the first year 12 students choose the subject with their honors subject. With the help of the principal the infrastructure of the department was developed. The library and practical equipments like still and Movie camera, computer, laptop was introduced for the students. In the year 2013-14 educational year Mass communication and journalism was introduced as honors subject with the seat limit of 35. Since then, the department is running successfully. Most of the pass out students have found their space in the main stream media as well as in teaching profession and in another department also.

OBJECTIVE OF THE DEPARTMENT :

As the authority of the Balurghat Mahila Mahavidyalaya is Very much careful about their student’s future the Department of Mass Communication also careful for its students. The department is trying to develop positive attitude, professional mentality and smartness among the students and make them prepare for the job in different sectors including the Government sector.

MAJOR MILESTONE SINCE INCEPTION OF THE DEPARTMENT :

• Our students are working in different main stream medias as anchor, sub editor and contain writer.
• A few students are preparing for higher studies.
• As a part of our field work for practical exam our students have find different problems in village areas and draw attention of the administration to solve the problem.

COURSE OFFERED :

• The Department arrange training programmes in Mass Communication, which introduces and trains students in various media formats.
• As a part of practical work, it concentrates in the core areas of Development Communication mainly in rural development, New Media and Documentary Film making.
• The department consciously carries forward its open approach to synergies of resources and expertise and engages in collaborations with various institutions and individuals to push forward its academic goals.
• It also holds training workshops on media skills, animation, basic filmmaking, scripting and photography in order to build capacity in areas of Mass Communication.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT :

Monthly wall magazine, monthly news paper of the department run by our students and Facebook page of the department.

• For the departmental newspaper, the students are the decision maker and organizer.

SEMINAR/ CONFERENCE/ WEBINAR CONDUCTED :

one webinar has been conducted on “media and its recent trends”.

FUTURE PLANS :

Our aim is to introduce more and more personality development courses. We are trying to arrange more and more online classes by the different professors of different universities and colleges. Our department working as a team to reach more and more students through workshop on professional courses.
