PHILOSOPHY

History

The history of this department is as old as the college. Since 1970, the department has a long journey and served as an academic resource to this locality. It has always tried to enhance the quality of the students through teaching and closely knit teacher – student bond.

In the initial years, Philosophy was taught only as general subject. At the time of inception, the college was affiliated to NBU.  The year 1984 is significant to the department, in the sense, in this year, Honours Course was introduced and it was the only college in Dakshin Dinajpur district, where Philosophy Honours was taught. . Subsequently the second post and third post were also sanctioned and Madhabi Chowdhury joined this post in 1986.

In 2011, Sujata Biswas came as guest faculty and now upgraded as SACT. She is also an ex-student of our department. At that time the vacancy was supplemented by the part-time faculties – Dr. Amiya Chatterjee, Avijit Sarkar , Ayesa and Baby Pal. At present, we are also having Prof. Shyamal Tudu and Prof. Joly Roy as permanent faculty, since the year 2016. Today, the department is working with its complete capacity and trying to meet the requirements of the students with available resources. Though it started teaching in a small building, now, it is having a separate departmental chamber, modern teaching aids and also a departmental library consisting of  reference books and text books. In 2007 this college came under Gour Banga University.

Objective

The students of this department mainly come from the adjacent villages. Due to various socio-economic reasons, the number of students is not so high.  All the teachers give their best effort in imparting right kind of education which can fulfill the needs of the students. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, they were not only taking care of the academic progress through online classes but also have always tried to boost them psychologically. Class tests are conducted for them at regular intervals,  to ensure their academic excellence. Teachers also take special classes and give them study materials, as per their need.

With relatively thin flow of students, the department has a good success rate. Many of them continue post graduate studies and a good number of students are placed in different in schools, colleges, government and non-government offices.

Extra-Curricular

Other than academic activities, students participate in games and sports as well as in cultural events. They actively join NCC and NSS Programmes of the college too.

The department has its own Wall Magazine, Chetana which came into being in 2012. So far two issues of the magazine have been published.

Seminar/Conference/Webinar

Department organizes special lectures by renowned professors of different universities.

Future plan

Though the department has travelled a long way, there are yet to do many things. But the department is proud of perfect co- ordination and a cordial teacher-student relationship, which play a significant role in maintaining a peaceful atmosphere and a consistent progression. We will try to conduct a departmental excursion if the situation permits.
